Today, Gigs and I assisted Christian with the cows.
It's been so incredibly hot here, and we've
found that working with the cows in the cool of the
evening is always the best decision for all involved.
I'm learning that less is always more with cattle.
Less disruption, less energy, less movement, and less stress make
calmer and more cooperative cows.
They all needed to go through the chute for a complete check-up,
including ear tags, deworming medicine, weighing,
and pregnancy checks for the mamas.
Good news! All mama's are pregnant!! (Good boy, Merlin!)
Our records indicate a few mamas will calf early next month.
Gigs put fly tags in each ear and caught and sorted the cows
into the waiting bay for their turn.
Christian did all the vaccines, preg-checking,
and I sat on a bucket and recorded everything in Bov-IQ.
(thankyouverymuch!).
In the pitch-black darkness, with only our headlamps,
we felt like the children of Israel
working the cattle while being relentlessly harassed by swarms of pesky gnats.
Swarms! Swarms, I tell you!!
